Other images- The magazine is minimalistic in the fact that
it only has two other images on the page. They are both in black and white so
also add to the minimal tone of the magazine; this could again attract readers
who are more into in depth reading than a lot of crowded images.
Masthead- the mast head stays true to the original design
which attracts the reoccurring audience and fans of the magazine. The red
brings out the white text and also stimulates people to make quick decisions
like buying the magazine. White represents simplicity which could again reflect
the lack of imagery and more content the magazine has to offer.
Text- The main sell line is kept simple with the name of the
band in white against the main image. The font is almost as large as the mast
head showing equal prioritizing when it comes to keeping the magazines main
audience and the bands main audience lured in. The writing around the title is
a catchy slogan which has a rhythmic beat to it which suits the genre of
magazine. There is also a quotation on the main page which attracts the
audience as they will want to know what context the quotation is embedded in.
Information- the key information like the price and date are
very small, this is because it is targeted to young people who are often
without income therefore if the price was bigger it may but the audience off
buying the magazine.
Colour- the colours red, yellow and white text contrasts
heavily against each other. This draws the attention of the reader to the text
which says ‘4 free posters’.
Images- A majority of the images on the contents page are
perfectly square. This could imply like the image that all sides are equal so
every side of the story is covered. It
also gives the magazine a more professional and polished look which insinuates
it is targeted at an older audience with a clear idea of what they want as
supposed to young teenagers who have a shorter attention span therefore jump
from story to story throughout the magazine.
One of the images at the side of the page is an advertisement for a weekly
subscription; this again insinuates the magazine is targeted at the older
generation who have a job but with disposable outcome. The background of this
image is red which ties in with the red in the middle image which catches our
attention therefore we are likely to go to this image secondly. The yellow
writing clashes against the red which not only makes it stand out but could
reflect the loud and busy lifestyle some of the audience may have therefore do
not have time to go out and physically buy a copy of the magazine therefore
would rather get the subscription.
Text- Most of the main lines enticing you into the article
are pull quotes; they give the reader a bit of the article which makes them
want to read on. This combined with the writing under the quote (for example;
‘Bold words, Justin Vaccines, but it’s hard to disagree’) add to the
conversational tone of the piece giving it a more relaxed feel which gives the
target a light relief from their busy everyday lives. The page numbers of the
‘biggest’ articles are in a bold and large font. They also overlap the image
giving the page depth and making the number stand out against the image making
it easier for the reader to navigate around the magazine. This fits in with the
older generations lifestyle as they may not have time to read the whole
magazine and might just read bits at a time.
Information- The date is under the title ‘INSIDE THIS WEEK’.
This adds to the organised feel of the magazine and the professional lifestyle
the target audience may lead.
Images- The immediate
thing you notice about the dominant image is the symmetry of it. This gives the
article an artistic feel and again makes it feel very organised and polished. It
could again represent how the interviewer/article is going to cover all sides
of the story equally. The mise en scene of the image makes it seem desolated
and untouched which would reflects on the artists music with implications no
one has gone there and done what they have done before. The colour red has an
assertive effect on people and encourages them to make quick decisions. It is
also a colour used on flags to shower power and determination which could
represent the bands attitude towards their music career. The red in the sofas link to the red in the
title and the red in used to highlight their name among the text, this highlights
the most important bits of the text will be easier to remember and recall
therefore the article will have a long lasting effect on the reader.
“Greene, Bell,
and Boyer (21), further explained that warm types of colours such as
yellow, red and orange have been found to have a greater effect on attention
compared to the cool type of colours like brown and gray.”
Text- The text on
the page is quite small making it appear as though there is not as much as
there is. This tricks the reader into reading some of thinking that there is
much but in reality there is and therefore when they are hooked they will end
up reading the whole article. It is also easier on the eye and fits in with the
minimalistic setting the band is sitting in in the photo. The name of the band is in the top left corner
of the page which is the first place we naturally read. This helps the reader
make a quick decision whether they want to continue reading the article or not.
Dominant image- The dominant image on this cover page has
aggressive connotations due to the facial expressions and actions of the model.
The red shoes act as a compliment to the rest of the page and colour scheme
showing that the magazine is very artistic and polished therefore attracting a
more artistic audience. The image is both in front and behind text giving it
depth and a 3D effect making it stand out against others when in a shop. The
black clothes the model is wearing stereotypically implies mystery and might
make the reader want to see what she as an artist/musician is about. This
contrasted with the red shoes which as stated before acts as an assertive
effect on the reader therefore will be more likely to buy the magazine.
Other Images- There is only one other image on the cover
page however it does not clash against the main image as the blue in it
complements the blue text dotted around the page still making them fit in and
perhaps trying to make a point that the band in the image (which have been
around for a while), still have a place in the music industry. Blue gives a
calming effect and may give the reader some light relief from the previously
aggressive and contrasting colours used. This helps attract loud audiences not
afraid to voice opinions and the quieter people. The image is also at a tilt
which suggests that they are putting a twist on music, this reflection and
ideology will entice the reader to see the logic behind it.
Masthead- The magazine stays true to its original masthead
and sticks with the same colour and design. The masthead is slightly covered by
the dominant image implying it is a well-known brand and not all of it needs to
be seen as it has a big enough audience anyway.
Text- The size of the text varies on the front page
presumably depending of the importance/ relevance of the article to the target
audience. The piece of text that most stands out is ‘KICKS OFF’ which again has
negative and aggressive connotations perhaps attracting more loud and introvert
personalities to buy the magazine.
Images- An extreme close up image dominates a majority of
the contents page. Its contrasting colours of red white and black also draws
our attention to this image more than any of the others. The colours are also
strong colours that often prompt us to make quick decisions, in this case it
could be to read that article that centres around the artist (who is probably
the most well known in the magazine hence the bigger image). Like this dominant
image, all the other images are also square. This implies that all sides of the
stories are covered within the magazine and could even show that they are all
of equal importance to the magazine and to the target audience, which would
make the magazine more applicable to a wider audience.
Text- The text on the page are all of similar sizes and are
positioned on the left side of the page which is naturally where you read
first. This makes it more suited to those with a general enjoyment for reading
rather than just a magazine.
Essential Information-The issue number is situated at the
top of the page and is central, this seems as though the magazine wants to
proudly display the issue number and like it to be clearly stated as proof of
its success making the target audience more tempted to buy it.
Images- The main
image dominates the left side of the page and consists of natural black red and
white colours, which complements the colour scheme. A the image dominates one
side of the page it is implied that the look of the artist is of equal
importance to her music which would attract music fans and possibly fashions
fans henceforth broadening the target audience. The subjects pose is quite aggressive
and serious perhaps implying a more serious tone to the music the artist is
producing. There is also another image of the artist surrounded by buildings;
this could be a georgraphical reference to London which is iconic for Britain
implying that the artist is of equal importance to Britain as a nation.
Text- There is a lot of text on the left hand side of the
page which is naturally where you first read; this combined with red which is
an incentive colour may prompt the reader to read the article. A big red ‘C’ is
also behind the text of the article which highlights the pull quote at the
bottom of the page.
Dominant Image- The first aspect that immediately stands out
on the page is the depth the image has on the cover. It overlaps the mast head
however is behind other text giving it a 3d effect so it almost jumps off the
shelf when buyers see it. The subject in the main image is also wearing a white
vest which highlights the colourful tattoos he has, this immediately attracts a
younger audience and is enhanced with the idea of ‘7 INKTASTIC POSTERS’ and the
main sell line ‘THE TATTOO ISSUE’.
Other images- There are a lot of other images on the page
that overlap our dominant image making the page clustered and busy. This links
with the idea that the main target audience do not have very busy lives with no
responsibilities therefore spare time to read a busy magazine. All the images
on the left hand side of the magazine are square or rectangle shapes however
the image to the right is circular drawing more attention to that image and henceforth
article. This may be because the subjects in the image are the second priority
after the subject in the main image, and the magazine believes that they will
also attract the audience further. Although in every image there is a male
there is also a female in the circular image which makes it likable from both a
male and female point of view.
Masthead- The masthead is partly covered by the dominant
image of the cover making the magazine appear established. Although the
masthead is large and contrasts heavily against the background of the magazine,
we barely notice it against everything else on the page, this implies that the
magazine is so recognisable itself it does not need a masthead to establish it.
Text- The main sell line conforms to its context and stays
in with the style of ‘tattoos’ which is the main theme of the magazine issue.
The yellow in the text compliments the masthead and almost highlights it as it
was almost un noticeable before. The black in the text contrasts against the
yellow and could reflect the audience’s clash in society as the youth that are
attracted by the magazine are often the youth that get blamed for a lot of
things that are wrong with today’s society.
Some of the text comes from the side of the page in a banner style and
some is dotted about on the page. This seems purposely unorganised as a younger
generation don’t need organisation if their life, it almost, to some extent,
reflects the unorganised style of music the magazine includes in its articles.
Images- the dominant image of this page resembles a comic
book image which makes the page more likable for the target audience, which is
a younger generation. The image also includes text including a personal pronoun
which engages the audience and makes them feel like they are included in the
magazine which may also appeal more to a younger audience as their attention
needs to be held more than older people. This is due to the ever changing
society we live in, in which technology is advancing and multitasking is becoming
easier therefore it is harder to keep someones attention for quite as long. The
contents page only has two other images on the page making it easy and clear to
find information and navigate around the magazine. It is also easy to select
which pages you would rather read over others again appealing to a younger
audience who don’t have the attention span to read every article.
Text- There is quite a lot of text on the page however it is
clearly broken down due to the lay out again making it easier to select which
article you would rather read etc. There is also a editors note on the bottom
of the page which addresses the audience immediately with the words ‘HELLO,
READERS’ in bold. This again makes the readers feel included within the
magazine and captures there attention more.
Essential Information- Information such as the date and the
magazine issue are at the top right hand side of the page. It is clear to see
as it is in its own space, this makes it more appealing to loyal fans and
collectors who collect all the issues as it is easy to differentiate between
them.
Images: The subjects in the dominant image on the page look
quite serious and would probably fit in with Millum’s theory of Invitational
facial expressions. This adds mystery therefore if a reader is flicking through
the pages of the magazine before purchasing it they will be more likely to buy
it as they will want to know what the article is about. The other images are
all in black and white which allows the main image to stand out more with its
pop of red and purple colours. The colour is mostly focused on the lead singer
on the band suggesting he will have a more dominant role within the interview
which is more than likely be what the audience want.
Text: There is a lot of text on the page organise in
columns, the bold questions in between responses break it up a lot making it
easier for the reader to jump from section to section if they get bored and so
wish to as a lot of younger audiences will.
